Have you ever woken up in a cold sweat because of worry? Do you know that feeling? It is very unpleasant and most of us have experienced this or something similar to it at sometime in our lives. There is something so insidious about worry and anxiety. It can open the door to ‘fear’ which can grip the mind and in extreme cases virtually paralyse a person.
 
Author John Ortberg says “Fear disrupts faith and becomes the biggest obstacle to trusting and obeying God.” #1 

So what are we to do when anxiety and fear come knocking on the door? Well for me God’s Word is the very best answer. I say this because by reading the Word of God my faith is certainly built up. I guess that this is not surprising because we know that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Rom 10:17 NKJV)

On a number of occasions when I have been worried and anxious I have meditated on the truth found in the Bible. One of the scriptures that has been a huge encouragement to me is Philippians 4:6-7. It has on a number of occasions been a ‘Rhema word’ i.e. the brought to mind, enlivened Word of God, for me. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT)

The Bible - the Word of God - is the enduring blueprint for us all. It instructs us on how we should live, it reveals much about God and builds us up so that we can be people of faith rather than people living in fear.
